Lime Street Gateway is a high quality transport infrastructure project forming vastly improved linkage to Liverpool’s main railway station and associated underground station. The project is transformational and vastly improves the gateway to Liverpool from a tired collection of buildings to an uplifting public realm experience. The project transforms public accessibility of the station by engineering gradual ramps through the steeply sloping site making it accessible to all users. In addition, a new scenic lift and subway connection is provided linking the upper station concourse level with the Mersey Rail underground.

Previously the site was blighted by very steep, indirect or unappealing access options for the general public. The improved access has been carefully designed and considered to minimise intrusion providing an enhancement to the Grade II Listed station buildings and World Heritage Site which the site is located within.

Other sustainable credentials include use of durable natural stone, re-use of demolition waste providing bulk fill to build the required levels and use of recycled plastic materials in seating. The promotion of pedestrian access and the creation of additional public spaces also provide long terms sustainable benefits for the City of Liverpool.

The circa £9m project is funded by a combination of European Regional Development Fund and Regional Development Agency funding and facilitated by HCA and Liverpool Vision.

The redevelopment of the public realm and access to the station was a key part in helping Lime Street win Station of the Year in the National Rail Awards in 2010.
